How to Survive a 12-Hour Shift Without Losing Your Mind

Twelve hours sounds simple on paper. In practice it's a full workday stretched across breakfast, lunch, and sometimes a second dinner — with none of the usual breaks to reset. We asked working nurses and techs what actually gets them through, and the answers were refreshingly unglamorous.

Pack like you mean it

  • Protein over sugar — a granola bar spikes and crashes; a handful of almonds or a hard-boiled egg holds steadier.
  • A liter bottle you can refill without thinking, not a cup you'll forget at the nurses' station.
  • A second pair of socks. Your feet will thank you around hour eight.

Protect the first hour and the last hour

The middle of the shift takes care of itself — you're in it, moving fast. It's the edges that get neglected: arriving under-fed, leaving over-caffeinated. Eat something real before you clock in, and give yourself ten minutes to decompress before you drive home.

"I stopped trying to power through on coffee alone. Real food, real water, and shoes that don't fight me — that's 80% of getting through a 12."
Dana R., ICU RN

And yes — what you're wearing matters more than people admit. Fabric that traps heat or bunches at the waist becomes a distraction by hour six. It's a small thing that compounds over twelve hours into a big one.
